Portugal qualified for the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar as Group H winners, despite losing their final group match 2-1 to South Korea, and have now secured a place in the quarter-finals final with a crushing 6-1 victory against Switzerland .

Back-to-back victories against Ghana and Uruguay proved to be enough for Portugal to reach the knockout stage. While their pre-match preparations were overshadowed by the uproar over Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the bench, they continued to beat the Swiss thanks to a hat-trick from Goncalo Ramos – who replaced Ronaldo – and goals from Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leao, with opponents only able to muster a consolation via Manuel Akanji in response.

Fernando Santos’ team will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals. Expect a lot of debate over whether Ronaldo should return to the starting XI.
