You may think that 50/50 or the RNG artifact are your worst enemies Genshin Impactbut one of the most challenging things in the game is actually building the character you were inspired by.
Not only can it be painstakingly time-consuming to cultivate materials for character ascension from bosses, but some materials are so elusive that it’s nearly impossible to put them all on the map!
We have decided to list the five most annoying (and hated) ascension materials to obtain.
If you’re wondering why I did this, it’s because it took me 60 hours to find enough scarabs to get my Cyno to maximum ascension, so this is an article that was written out of sheer toil and spite (just kidding, maybe ?).
Qingxin (Liyue)
Used by: Ganyu, Shenhe, Xiao
This white flower can be beautiful, but with its growth in the peaks of the Liyue Mountains, Qingxin can be a big hassle to grow.
If you don’t have an exploration team that can help you climb mountains easily (like Xiao, Kazuha, or Venti), you’ll be stuck crawling up mountain slopes to preserve the little stamina you have left just to get two or three of these in. a position.
It also doesn’t help that there are currently three characters who need Qingxin to ascend. So, if you’re a main Ganyu, Shenhe, or Xiao who is waiting for their rerun and doesn’t have them yet, you should probably start climbing those mountains now.
Wolf Hook (Mondstadt)
Used by: Razor
Only Razor needs this Mondstadt specialty, but the Wolfhook is so small and so hidden that it can be a big headache to comb through Wolvendom just to find a handful of these pesky berries.
Although relatively easy to find behind shrubs and tree trunks, Rifthounds roaming the Wolvendom make farming rather troublesome.
Violetgrass (Liyue)
Used by: Qiqi, Xinyan
In the past, Violetgrass was the community’s first choice as the most problematic local specialty to grow. And for good reason.
These pretty flowers bloom only on the mountain slopes and rock faces of Liyue. So not only do you have to constantly live on the edge (literally) trying to reach them, you also have to pay attention to your stamina and constantly climb, jump or use characters that can make your life easier (like Kazuha or Venti).
But the problem is that Violetgrass doesn’t usually grow in clusters of two or three like Qingxin. Your mountaineering can most of the time lead you to just one!
So why is my Qiqi only level 70? Violetgrass can be nearly impossible to grow comfortably.
Onikabuto (Inazuma)
Used by: Arataki Itto, Shikanoin Heizou
Arataki Itto’s favorite bug may be interesting to watch, but it’s not easy to grow. These beetles are sparsely scattered throughout Inazuma, so finding enough of them to fully trace your Itto or Heizou is a difficult task.
Not to mention, their purple hue sometimes blends well with Inazuma’s landscape color palette, so you’ll end up squinting just to spot one in nature.
That said, General Watatsumi and good dog Gorou are a 4 star that most players should have, so getting him to score Onikabuto on the minimap is very helpful.
Scarab (Sumeru)
Used by: Cyno
If you don’t have Tighnari to help you spot them, get ready for a world of pain. And even then, you are truly ready for a lifetime’s suffering with these insects.
Beetles are so scattered around the Sumeru Desert that you will start hallucinating trying to find these little insects. It also doesn’t help that they blend so well with the brown soil. Twitter user @yuehu_mori summed up the feeling of finally having found a Scarab after hours of searching in a beautiful work of art perfectly:
Another thing that makes the Beetle the most difficult and heartbreaking local specialty to grow is that most of them are stuck behind world missions.
I’m sure you’ve come across Cyno main with display names like “CanIHaveScarabPls” desperately trying to join your world so they can find these elusive scarabs.
The choice to put Scarabs first is also something very personal, being a new Cyno main myself. I ended up spending three days glued to my screen for nearly 18 hours each time trying to get on my Cyno.
Let’s hope no other future characters need these total torture bugs.
