Watch: The Glass Onion cast shares festive board game traditions

Janelle Monae has revealed how she and the cast of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery — on Netflix December 23 — took their love of mysteries off-set during filming. And how she dressed for the occasion.

In a new interview with Yahoo UK, the award-winning actor/singer described how the cast got together to play murder mystery games, something she describes as “just right for me.”

During breaks in filming “we would play murder mystery games while on set. I dressed elegantly, wore a mustache with a small curl at the end, a cane and a top hat.

“They asked me if I was traveling with all this and why I was so prepared. I told them ‘I live like this!’”

It made the set a home away from home for her as she loves playing games of all kinds. “I play a lot of games like The Mafia and Werewolf, which are murder mystery games. I dress up and invite people over.”

She also enjoys board games like backgammon and Rummikub, admitting “I’m very competitive. I’m trying to stop that side of me, but it’s there.

In the sequel to Knives Out, legendary Deep South detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns to delve into the mystery surrounding tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and his band of eccentric friends.

Bron summons them all to his luxurious Greek hideaway through a series of intricate puzzles, and when what should be a joke turns deadly serious, it’s up to Blanc to solve the most baffling riddle of all.

Unlike Monae however, Craig is not a fan of board games. “I just don’t like them,” he said. “I like crossword puzzles. I do them just to get my brain going, but I’m not much of a board game player. I join because I like the company, but I prefer the chat around. I can’t take them too seriously.

With Christmas just around the corner, other members of the ensemble’s huge cast spoke about the games their families play during the holiday season. Leslie Odom Jr’s family has a tradition of its own: a jigsaw puzzle.

“He’s one of the big ones. Between Christmas and New Years there is always a moving puzzle and it brings people together during the day, just to put a couple of pieces together.

Kathryn Hahn’s family does something far more competitive, and she’s yet to master it. “My husband’s family has a nut-rolling contest,” she explained.

“I don’t know how to explain it, but if you win your name gets added to a trophy and let’s just say I didn’t win. I always miss nuts! I haven’t hit a dice yet! Maybe this year I’ll hit a nut!

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has already received a number of award nominations, including two Golden Globes – Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) for Daniel Craig.

Work on what is currently called Knives Out 3 is already underway, although the release date has not been revealed. Daniel Craig’s return as Benoit Blanc has been confirmed, but the rest of the cast is under wraps, though it’s likely there will be an entirely new lineup.

For now, however, Craig, Monae and their co-stars, which also include Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and some surprise cameos, hit Netflix just in time for Christmas.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be released on Netflix on December 23rd. Watch a trailer below.
