by Jodie Turner-Smith is a red carpet tour de force. The Queen and slim the actress has been turning one-on-one heads at Hollywood events for the past few years with a relentless shoot of jaw-dropping looks. And now, her style is finally getting the recognition she deserves.
Turner-Smith will host tonight’s 2022 Fashion Awards, hosted by Diet Coke. The British Fashion Council’s annual event, hosted in the Royal Albert Hall, was hosted by Pose’s Billy Porter last year and saw awards presented to the likes of the late Virgil Abloh, the former creative director of Gucci, Alessandro Michele and British Vogue editor Edward Enninful.
The actress has earned her status as a style icon since her 2019 press tour Queen and slimalongside Daniel Kaluuya, where she showed up at every red carpet or promotional event with great fanfare.
One of Turner-Smith’s earliest and most memorable shoots was a custom canary yellow Gucci gown she wore to the 2020 BAFTA awards while eight months pregnant, strutting the red carpet arm in arm with her husband and fellow actor Joshua Jackson.
During her pregnancy she also became an early proponent of bump-out maternity looks, years before Rihanna hit the internet with her pot-bellied pregnancy looks in 2022. On The Graham Norton Show in 2020, Turner-Smith perched on the fabled red couch while rocking a black wrapped crop top and matching pants, paired with a chunky snake choker, choppy bob and exposed baby bump.
RiRi may have been lauded for her tummy time look this year, but that was two years earlier, and Turner-Smith was nowhere near Rihanna’s level of fame when she appeared on The Graham Norton Show.
It has attracted a fair amount of criticism, with online trolls demanding “the pregnant woman to cover up.” But Jodie Turner-Smith dresses however she wants and clarified in a Twitter post that she “gives a damn about your disdain for pregnant women’s bodies.”
Following the bold baby bump looks of the Queen and slim press tour that cemented Turner-Smith as a favorite in the fashion world, she became an ambassador for Gucci. Perfectly encapsulating the Gucci ethos of (recently) former creative director Alessandro Michele — maximalist, sexy, and gender-fluid — Turner-Smith continued to show up at a variety of events in full Gucci looks, earning praise apiece.
She went flamingo in November 2021 when she attended the LACMA Art + Film gala, wearing a bedazzled multi-tonal pink Gucci gown with hot pink ostrich feather bracelets and contrasting emerald eye makeup. The rest of 2021 brought more and more Gucci, and if there’s one thing about Turner-Smith, it’s that she loves color. One of the star’s most memorable looks from last year came from another chat show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she wore a full Christopher John Rogers look with a rainbow embroidered corset and multi-colored panties.
She’s only pulled more stops this year, going full flapper at the 2022 Met Gala, showing up at the Venice Film Festival in a gown that can only be described as a chic version of Joseph’s technicolor dream coat, and gracing Cannes with the most interesting looks of the fortnight.
She’s a natural fit for the Fashion Awards, and we can only dream of what she could come up with to host the event. But you can bet well that it’s big, bold, and colorful to make your mouth water.
