Denise Welch says she wants to return to acting full-time after leaving Coronation Street 22 years ago.

Since leaving the pebbles, the 64-year-old has mainly been seen on screens as a panelist on ITV’s Loose Women.

And in a move that could see her packing up her regular stint as a panelist on ITV’s daytime chat show, she tells the Evening Standard she’s finally ready to return to her original day job.

When asked if she would ever return to acting full-time, Welch, who was playing the hit West End show Elf The Musical during the holiday season, said: ‘For the first time in a long time I miss the my acting.

“That’s what I’m going to focus on next year.”

When asked if she would try to reprise her Corrie role, she said she wasn’t sure it could happen even if she wanted to.

She joked, “Well, the girl who used to play my sister is now playing someone else’s sister, so I think that [my return] that would be very, very unlikely.”

The mother-of-two, who praised the stage version of Elf in London’s West End, said she was more likely to focus on returning to her roots as a stage actress.

“I miss theater and I don’t mean commercial theater,” she said.

“I mean small theaters where people are almost sitting on your lap.

“It’s my origins in the theater that I want to go back to.”

In 2000, the producers of Coronation Street wanted the star to do a storyline in which her character Natalie has a miscarriage.

However, she declined, saying it would be too much since the character had already lost her husband and child.

Welch, who was expecting a baby at the time, decided to leave the show.

In 2006 she returned to the soap as Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road before leaving the soap in 2010.

She then returned to soap operas in 2021 as Hollyoaks’ Trish Minniver, the mother of established character Maxine Minniver played by Nikki Sanderson.

However, just one year later, in January 2022, he left the Channel 4 series.

He posted about his exit on social media, but only responded to fan reactions about his character’s departure.

Since she wasn’t killed off, fans have speculated that she could return to the show in the future.
