Ghost’s printed midaxi is our dress of the month

There is nothing like a new dress at the start of the winter season to freshen up your wardrobe. Yes, you heard it right: dresses are a must-have for the coldest month.

While the mini dress is back in full force for Fall / Winter 2022, it’s the longer hems we’ve been relying on for many years now, especially the midaxi lengths, which come just above the ankle to create a truly elegant silhouette. We love how they provide coverage in the colder months (just add knee-high boots or tights) but feel breezy and cool in the summer.

Of course, longer dresses can look a bit scruffy if you don’t get the right shape. You need something ultra-feminine that highlights the body in subtle ways. Take the Audrey style from Ghost – it’s cut to skim the bust and create an hourglass fit, then flatters to a curvy A-line skirt.

The heavy drape of the quality crepe is also what makes this number so flattering: it smoothes out any lumps and bumps (especially with the help of shapewear) and doesn’t stand up. We also love the voluminous balloon sleeves, the keyhole cut on the front, and the covered buttons that cross the front.

London-based brand Ghost Fashion has been revered for its cult bias-cut dresses since its launch in 1984. Famous for her formal designs, Millie Mackintosh dressed her bridesmaids in Ghost for her high-profile wedding with Professor Green in 2017 and Léa Seydoux wore one of her sage green Olivia dresses in the 2015 Bond film Specter.

However, a few years ago, the brand began to devote itself more to ready-to-wear and we have been fascinated by it ever since. Ghost continues to support its unique luxury fabrics like velvet, silk and satin, but this season has launched a range of 60s and 70s inspired styles that are creating a completely different vibe. In fact, some of the retro prints look unique, like something you might see in a vintage shop.

We’ve been obsessed with the new launch of Ghost ever since we saw Holly Willoughby wearing one of the brand’s Fall / Winter 2022 dresses for This Morning. (Her extravagant leopard print floral midi is still available for purchase on the site, for your information.)

While we love This Morning presenter’s patchwork number, we think Audrey’s tile print will stand the test of time. Dusty blue tones are flattering on any skin tone, but it’s also available in a taupe iteration if you prefer something more subdued.

Wear yours now with knee-high boots and a trench coat or sheepskin coat, then switch to sneakers in spring. This is one of those DIY dresses that you will really need all year round.
