In the second episode of the royal couple’s highly anticipated docuseries, Meghan recalled her first meeting with Prince Harry’s grandmother shortly after they started dating in 2016.
Meghan said she wasn’t prepared to be introduced to the British monarch and recalled that as they were on their way to meet her, Prince Harry asked if she knew how to “bow down”.
“We were in the car, driving and he said to me, ‘You know how to curtsey right?’ and I just thought it was a joke,” the Duchess admitted.
Then she appeared beside Harry on the interview couch and recalled the dramatic curtsey, bowing her head and spreading her arms. The clip received mixed reactions from viewers, who called the curtsey “disrespectful and offensive” to the late queen.
Now, a video showing Meghan Markle curtsying as her character Rachel Zane Do you live – the TV series in which he starred before joining the royal family – has gone viral.
The video, which was shared by royalty fan @emiliehrh on Instagram, shows Meghan taking a quick bow during a first season of the legal drama.
“Remember when Meghan Markle told Oprah she had no idea what bowing was, and lied again about the Netflix documentary, and teased the queen with a ‘medieval times’ comment?” the critic captioned the post. “Here she is on @suitspeacock a few years ago doing a PERFECT CURTSEY.”
Meghan Markle previously revealed during her TV interview with Oprah Winfrey that she didn’t know she was due to curtsy before the Queen. The mother-of-two said she was baffled that she should have curtsied, considering the monarch was Prince Harry’s grandmother.
On December 15, Netflix aired all six episodes of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex docuseries, Harry and Megan. Throughout the series, Prince Harry and Meghan have condemned the media’s treatment of the Duchess, blamed Meghan’s miscarriage Mail court case, and claimed Prince William ‘screamed and shouted’ at Prince Harry in a ‘terrifying’ row at the Sandringham estate amid ‘Megxit’.
Meanwhile, Meghan said she was “surprised” at the royal family’s formality, which continues even behind closed doors. Speaking in the second episode, the Duchess described the first time she met the current Prince and Princess of Wales.
“When Will and Kate came over and I first met her, they came over for dinner,” she recalled. “I remember wearing ripped jeans and being barefoot. I was a hug. I’ve always been a hug, I didn’t realize this is really jarring to a lot of Brits. I guess I began to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside was accomplished on the inside. There’s a way of being forward-facing, and then you close the door and say, “Now you can relax,” but that formality carries over to both sides. And that was surprising to me.
