Dexter: New blood spoilers ahead.

You know the old saying, when one door closes, another opens? Well, Dexter: New Blood seems to have taken that literally with its conclusion to season 1.

The serial killer with a conscience is back on our screens after 10 years of believing he got away with murder. But even living life in the quaint town of Iron Lake wasn’t enough to quell the lure of the Dark Passenger in his head.

Add in the return of your long lost baby and it was only a matter of time before things started going terribly wrong quickly.

While it seems like the future of the show is pretty wrapped up, Dexter has beaten the odds on more than one occasion and may now be continuing in a new form.

Even the bosses aren’t convinced we’ve seen the last of this story.

Not sure what we’re talking about? Here’s everything you need to know about a potential Dexter: New Blood season two and beyond.

Dexter: New Blood season 2 – Will there be one?

Michael C Hall as Dexter, Jack Alcott as Harrison, Dexter New Blood

You’d think the answer to that question would be “no” if you watched the season finale. After his past was exposed, Dexter – who had renamed himself to become local salesman Jim Lindsay – finally met a grisly end.

Yes, the character Michael C Hall famously walked away from this death spiral, following a showdown with his tormented and distant teenage son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).

But that doesn’t mean it’s all over yet.

In the finale, it seemed like the pair were finally bonding after reuniting, with both sharing their dark sides and lust to kill. They were both “born in blood” as Dexter himself would say, thanks to a historical childhood trauma in which both were tragically left weeping in their parents’ blood after their murders.

But in an effort to escape Iron Lake as Dexter’s past misdeeds started to catch up with him, Harrison ended up pulling a gun on his father after he failed to abide by his own rules about who should and shouldn’t live.

Rule number one: only kill those who deserve to die. By killing a police officer who was holding him in custody, Dexter broke it.

Meanwhile, Miami Metro’s Angel had finally discovered that his old blood spatter analyst friend was actually alive and well, and most likely the mysterious Bay Harbor Butcher. As a result, the network was still closing in on Dexter.

Alcott talked about what it was like to play the character responsible for taking down a very memorable anti-hero.

“I was concerned about that after filming it, because I was like, ‘Oh my God, I killed Dexter. I’m going to be the most hated man in America for at least a week,'” the young actor said (via Esquire).

“Because even if it’s the right ending, the ending the show deserves, the ending the character deserves, the ending the character wants, there’s definitely a guilt that comes with killing off one of TV’s coolest characters.” all times.”

Alcott admitted that he felt the pressure when it came to the actual shooting in the climactic death scene.

“It was the most stressful thing I think I’ve experienced during filming,” she explained.

“I thought, ‘How am I going to deliver a performance worthy of all this buildup? I’m missing all this context.'”

However, guidance from Hall and the executive producers helped calm her nerves.

“The gun came much earlier in the original cut of the scene, so the whole scene was under fire,” Alcott recalls.

“Playing through it, we found that it comes later, it makes a lot more room for a nuanced scene. It’s not just an angry son shooting his father and more of a mutual discovery that this is how it’s supposed to end and it’s not going to work any other way.”

“It’s a divisive ending,” Alcott added.

“But I also feel incredibly lucky to be part of a story that will affect a lot of people. Whether it makes them angry, happy or sad, hate it, whatever, it’s good to tell stories that affect people—regardless of what the effect”.

Despite the lead character passing away, show bosses have already confirmed plans for a second season.

Speaking with TVLine, showrunner Clyde Phillips said, “It’s all up to Showtime. If they called me and said, ‘We want to do Harrison. We want you to understand that, ‘I’m pretty busy, but I’d drop everything I’m doing and just jump right into it. I’d love to do that, but it’s really up to Showtime.

In August 2022, TV executive David Nevins continued to fan the flames of a possible comeback during his chat with The Hollywood Reporter about future plans for Paramount Global:

“There are many things. What is the future [of] the Dexter franchise? I’m actively working on it.”

However, Showtime Networks president Gary Levine put a slight negative on all of this just a month later, in September 2022, when he said, “It’s too soon to tell,” whether or not New Blood will return. “We’re still basking in the glow of the limited series, which was all we hoped for.”

Now, that’s not a real no, even if it’s not the promising renewal announcement we were hoping for…

TV Line reported that the show was the most-watched series in Showtime history averaging 8 million weekly viewers across all platforms. 3 million viewers tuned in for the finale on premiere night alone, making it the most-watched Showtime finale in eight years, just short of Dexter’s finale which drew a whopping 3.3 million viewers in 2013.

As of November 2022, there has still been no official announcement about Dexter’s return for a potential second season of New Blood. But give it time… surely it’s a question of ‘when’ and not ‘if’.

Dexter: New Blood cast season 2 – Who will be there?

If Season 2 goes ahead (although, as we mentioned, there have been no official announcements) New Blood will shift the focus from Dexter to his son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.

The last we saw of a serial killer’s teenage son, he was on the run after killing his father. Police Chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) took the blame for Dexter’s death after finding Harrison with his body, allowing him to start life anew without the burden of his father’s murder to deal with.

We can’t say it was the best decision on his part, considering viewers already know that he himself has a string of dangerous killers, but there you have it.

With the possibility of a fresh start before him, it’s unknown where Harrison will go, or what he will do with what he’s learned from his father’s moral killer code.

As a result, who will join the cast list is up for debate. She is not related to any living relatives that we know of. She could literally go anywhere.

His real mother died in the fourth season of the original Dexter. We also learned that Hannah, Dexter’s girlfriend who left with Harrison for a better life in the season 8 finale, died offscreen of cancer between the original series and New Blood. It’s the only reason Harrison bothered to track down Dexter.

Now his father is dead too? The sky is literally the limit for this immensely troubled kid.

What will be the plot of Dexter: New Blood season 2?

Showrunner Clyde Phillips has stated that he would be ready for a second season, it would just be a case of US network Showtime giving them the green light.

In a chat with Deadlineconfirmed that this would mean moving forward with Harrison in the central role.

“Harrison is such a complicated character and has the seeds of the dark passenger within him,” he told them. “He IS capable. Look at that dejection of Dexter at the end, what’s in Harrison is that he has to kill this man.”

“Also, Harrison brings a different perspective to vigilantism than Dexter, which was quite surprising for Dexter,” Phillips adds. “He brings this optimistic youthful innocence, that he and his father are basically Batman and Robin—’Think about every time we take out one of these bad guys, how many lives we’re saving, that this bad person isn’t going to kill.’

“Dexter never thought about it. Dexter just took out bad guys because that was his code.”

Will Harrison be able to find a way to use his “Dark Passenger” side forever?
