Gareth Southgate’s England reached the knockout stages of the Qatar 2022 World Cup after defeating Wales in their final group match.
That result meant they topped Group B and set up a round of 16 meeting with Group A runners-up Senegal.
Despite suffering a knock, Harry Kane remains confident he can challenge for the Golden Boot and hopes he can shrug off any injury worries before Sunday’s encounter with Senegal.
England captain Kane had his foot scanned after a heavy challenge from Iran’s Morteza Pouraliganji in his Group B opener last week, and has had his ankle taped ever since.
But after being able to continue playing against Iran, the 29-year-old started against the United States and played for nearly an hour in the win over Wales before Southgate made adjustments to his rest legs.
“I’ve definitely played through worse stuff in my career,” Kane told the BBC. “In the match against Iran I could easily have played the full 90 minutes, I think the coach changed it for tactical reasons. I did a precautionary scan which is very common in our sport, came back pretty much everything clear and I was good to go.
“I know the hype and noise that can come with an injury. But to be honest the team is not just me, we have 26 players here who are all trying to achieve the same result, win the World Cup.”
Kane, who is within sight of Wayne Rooney’s record goalscoring for England, is yet to score in Qatar, with his side’s nine goals coming from elsewhere and Marcus Rashford slotted into Golden Boot contenders after scored three times.
After failing to score in the group stage of last year’s Euros, Kane struck four times in the knockout stage, netting goals against Germany, Ukraine and Denmark as England reached the final.
“I want to score in every game and the Euros were no different,” he added. “I wanted to score in the group matches, it didn’t make it until the round of 16 against Germany. This tournament is no different.

Disaster has struck Senegal before the World Cup has even started, with talismanic striker Sadio Mané ruled out of the tournament after picking up an injury while playing for Bayern Munich. But the Africa Cup of Nations champions still managed to progress from the group stage, winning two matches and losing one out of three.
They were unlucky in their first match against the Netherlands, holding on for more than 80 minutes before two late goals gave the Dutch victory.
Senegal survived the scare in their second match against hosts Qatar. After taking a two-goal lead, the home side threatened to cause a jolt by pulling one back in the 78th minute. But Senegal hit back six minutes later to put the game to rest.
Senegal were resilient in their final group match against Ecuador. They took the lead from an Ismaila Sarr penalty, but were repelled by a goal from Moises Caicedo. As against Qatar, Senegal responded quickly, with a clinical volley from Kalidou Koulibaly winning the game and securing last place.
How has England fared so far?
England’s World Cup got off to a convincing start, with their 6-2 win over Iran drawing much plaudits. A goalless draw against the United States followed, putting a damper on English excitement levels somewhat.
Another 45 minutes elapsed against Wales with England unable to find the net before two quick goals from Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden after the break turned the match in their favour.
Wales needed victory to keep their World Cup dreams alive but Rashford scored his second and England were able to see out the match to book their place in the knockout stages.
