After 21 years of animated Barbie movies, a live-action adaptation is coming to the big screen.
Warner Bros. is officially a Barbie girl, and the Internet already lives in a Barbie world. Twitter and TikTok were flooded with live coverage of the film’s shooting, with principal photography beginning in England in March 2022. Filming took place throughout Los Angeles, with appearances from notable Venice Beach cast members which aroused much public interest.
With its open set allowing people to get up close and personal with the inner workings of the film, the scenes are already deciphered and decoded, while the meme culture refuses to let go of what is set up to be completely unpredictable.

What do we know about the plot of the Barbie movie?
Unsurprisingly, not many details about Barbie’s storyline have been given so far.
Aside from the initial promotional footage that was released in June 2022 and its first teaser trailer, most of the knowledge about the film has come from public reports on social media. Photos of Robbie and Gosling skating in Los Angeles caused a lot of public speculation, along with images of their initial scenes together.
As Barbie’s first live-action movie, it’s likely to stay away from what fans have seen in animation. There’s no word on what time period the film will be set in or what genre it will embody.
It’s safe to say that audiences should expect the unexpected.
Is there a trailer for the Barbie movie?
The first Barbie teaser trailer was released in December 2022. It paid homage to the sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey by introducing Margot Robbie as the famous doll.
The trailer begins with a voiceover, in which children can be seen playing with dolls against a dusty, desert backdrop similar to the opening scenes of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film.
“Since the beginning of time, since there was the first little girl, there have been dolls. But dolls have always and forever been little dolls, until…” says the voice-over.
Robbie is then revealed as a giant Barbie doll, replacing the monolith that triggers the monkeys in 2001 to learn how to use weapons.
This causes the children in the clip to destroy their old dolls, culminating in a parody of the famous “matchstick”, with a child replaced by the Barbie logo.
Will the Aqua song be in Barbie?
As much as fans might like to sing along, Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” has already been barred from a movie appearance.
According to Variety, Aqua manager Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen said the song will not be used, with Warner Bros. thus far declining to comment.
This is believed to stem from Mattel’s bad blood with the Danish pop band since the song’s 1997 release.
Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
