Amazon launches “Inspire” in-app shopping for select users

DAVE BRIGGS: Amazon is taking its in-app shopping experience to another level, the company launching a TikTok-like feature called Inspire. Here’s how it works. Log into the Amazon shopping app and tap the light bulb icon. You can then choose from over 20 interests such as pets, makeup and games. Your selection brings you a personalized feed of products.

From there, you can browse product images and videos which you can then purchase directly from within the app. Amazon is rolling out the feature today to select US customers and will roll out to all US customers in the coming months. Seana, what do you think? Are you there?

SEANA SMITH: Oh, I’m in. This is brilliant for me. My big question is why hasn’t Amazon implemented this already? Because at least it seems like child’s play to me. We know that Amazon has partnered more and more with influencers over the past year. Many of us have seen it, in fact, happening on Instagram.

Amazon though, this feed… and I just saw the video that we just showed everyone. It seems much easier to shop via this feed than Netflix because Netflix often takes you to a third-party site, where, Amazon, you can do everything there.

DAVE BRIGGS: Do you mean Instagram?

SEANA SMITH: Instagram. What I said?

DAVE BRIGGS: Oh alright. Netflix. I was–

SEANA SMITH: Oh, that makes…

DAVE BRIGGS: I was wondering if there was anything that…

SEANA SMITH: No. Instagram, sorry.

DAVE BRIGGS: All right, yes.

SEANA SMITH: When you shop on Instagram, it takes you to a third-party site. Amazon, it’s all right there, which I think everyone’s looking for is as simple as possible. So this is huge for Amazon, and it’s also huge for influencers.

DAVE BRIGGS: I’m a sucker for Instagram shopping, I mean, I buy things on Instagram all the time. So this feels like such a natural sequel. And to relate that to what we talked about earlier in the week, it was the year of Google search. They just gave all the most popular answers. And the most popular answer to “how to become one” was Amazon Influencer.

SEANA SMITH: Yup.

DAVE BRIGGS: We’re globally speaking, that was the most common profession that people were trying to figure out how to become. Now, I didn’t even know an Amazon influencer was a thing until recently. That’s where we’re headed. I don’t think people will jump to this platform again. But for Amazon to get there…

SEANA SMITH: Oh, that’s huge.

DAVE BRIGGS: –after the bend? Oh boy. Brilliant move.

SEANA SMITH: And it’s just another example of Amazon taking even more care of our daily lives…

DAVE BRIGGS: I’m scared–

SEANA SMITH: –and spend more time on this app.

DAVE BRIGGS: And you get more AI, more data from us.

SEANA SMITH: I know it. I’m fine with it. If it makes my life easier, I look great in that look. But again, Amazon is really trying to capitalize on what appears to be the TikTok trend, a big win here in recent years…
